Our History

Founded in 1888, National Geographic has long stood at the intersection of exploration, science, and storytelling. From its early days as a scholarly publication to its evolution into a global media presence, the brand has continually expanded how people see and understand the world. Through pioneering photography, rigorous reporting, and trusted educational content, National Geographic set a new standard for visual storytelling. Its iconic yellow border became a symbol of credibility and curiosity, while its reach grew from print into film, television, and digital platforms. Throughout this evolution, National Geographic has remained committed to revealing the beauty, diversity, and interconnectedness of our shared planet.

Rebranding

With the rise of smartphones and digital media, the way people experience the world has become fast, visual, and shared. Traditional publishing no longer leads how audiences learn or connect. In response, National Geographic is evolving into a contemporary, digital-first brand that communicates through motion, interaction, and participation. Our storytelling is now immediate and immersive—designed to invite audiences to explore, engage, and understand rather than simply observe. By honoring our legacy of exploration and truth while embracing the language of today’s platforms, we transform curiosity into action and discovery into collective experience.
